Tao Hall of Innovation

About to announce my retirement from Monterey Bay.  Love to continue to contribute to the vision of the campus.  One way to accomplish that is to do a fundraising campaign

- $250K, I will contribute half of it over the next 12.5 years
- looking for 1000 graduates to donate the rest

BIT 104 will be named Tao Hall of Innovation - with each one donated more than $1000 listed at the door.

The fund is to be used to support COS students who engaged in innovation (that might lead to commercialization) and start-ups.

The Tao Hall of Innovation should have a dedicated page on university website and a sign visible from divarty street.

Not sure this will work but would be fun.

Urgent lunch of the Sunnyvale

Dr. W sent an urgent message needing help.  Understand the long messy history of the campus. I am reluctant. But it is an interesting opportunity to explore an area that I seldom touch. to do or not to do?

Went to a lunch at his home with wonderful view.  Have to think about it.

Growing Wings

As a parent, I try my best to make sure the kids are strong, independent, persistant, uptimitics, passionate - having strong wings so that can carry high and far.  DD is leaving home today, finally, flying away to college.

I can only hope I have instill the strength and value in him that he no longer need me.  Also, as any parent, I also worried that he will be so strong and wise that he no longer needs me, how ironic.

Good bye DD, you are going to college, reaching 18 years old.  I taught you, guided you, reminded you, bath you, feed you, diciplined you, punish you.  I saw you cry, angry, smiles, hungry, defeated, triumphed and grown. Every minute is extremely precious to me. You will not find out how much BB loves you, worried about you until one day, you dear son is going to college.

Be strong, DD, fly far and high.

The Effort to Enjoy

The most fortunate person enjoys what he does every day.  Having been pushing myself away from video viewing to more reading but felt reading is laborious.  The books on innovation, management, economics, even fictions, are not as enjoyable as video on youtube or netflix.

Not sure should I continue to push myself on reading, but continue to do so - Times, Fortune and Money are weekly tasks.

Watch numerous video clips at home, accompanying DD, who just have the wisdom teeth extracted, by conservative Ben Shipero.  While I don't agree with everything, definitely not on the gun and abortion, I concur with many of his ideas.

Socialist movement sounds great, tax the rich and distribute the wealth - usually by the ignorant young, clueless poor, or rich politician exploiting the formers.  But almost everywhere - Soviet union, China's "move forward", Venezuela, and now Taiwan.

Whenever there is more socialism, we lose our freedom to big government - without freedom, we don't have excellence, without excellence, we become poor.

The socialism leads to the tyranny of the majority - two wolves and one sheep deciding what's for dinner - will lead to chaos, dictatorship, fascism, poverty - and finally, a revolution to bring the state back to capitalism - hopefully moderate capitalism that supports competition and rules of law - in the meantime, education and support the philanthropic culture and process so the poor and weak are taken care of.

Without the rich, the poor will be poorer.  It is a harsh reality, but it is the reality.

Back to Monterey Bay after the "Brave Journey" at Mt Sierra

Completed my "big journey" down in Los Angeles presiding over Mt Sierra College over the last two years.  I came back to the Monterey Bay and resume my professorship. It is a great journey and a great sabbatical for me.

Not teaching over more than a year, coming back to the campus and preparing classes is both strange and familiar.  Without my reserved parking space and have to walk across campus is not a welcome change, but I will endure.

Designing an exciting course "CST 319 Computing Across the Disciplines" is a great experience, I would love to able to help many non-CS students to learn more about computer science and many of its power, and perils.

I am getting more opinionated because the global political climate is changing, I am not happy with either the conservative or the library. I especially don't like the coerced political correctness on university campuses, including my CSU.  Will have to do something about it - need to get use to writing a lot, and fast.
